Many mirrors are broken or damaged by
precariously balancing them during testing.
If you are guilty,
take the time to make something safe for use during testing. Don’t try to balance the mirror on a shelf !
Something
more elaborate is better, but this works, and can be made in a few minutes from
scrap timber and a few nails and bolts.

A V shaped
ledge or two padded nails tilting backwards stops the mirror from falling
forward [1],
but a latch at the top is safer. A bent
nail covered with duct tape will suffice.
Either the
stand, or the Ronchi tester can be height adjustable. Alternatively, the stand may be adjustable for tilt.
This stand
has a controlled tilt adjustment.
The bottom
of the adjusting bolt is best made conical to stop it "walking"
during adjustment. Do not use it on a
polished tabletop without protection.

[1] Thin mirrors may be distorted
slightly by the edge support during testing.
