The following is an unusual, simple method of using a wire wound grating exactly on axis.

I have never tried the system but see no reason it would not work.  There is some collaboration to this in Applied Optics mmmmm where gratings illuminated in a similar way are described.  Since the Grating/Grating light throughput is so high it is possible to simply place a piece of Aluminium foil or even a piece of white paper behind one portion of a good grating and use bright sunlight or a moderate light beam as the illuminant.

The principle is outlined because it may be of use on extremely deep surfaces.

The source is a glint off the polished wire strands of an illuminating beam and the Ronchi image is viewed through the strands.

There is no doubt this will work if the grating is made very accurately.  Even slight grating faults will seriously degrade its performance in what amounts to the Grating/Grating mode.

Since there are other ways to ensure close in axial performance using a slit, I would not recommend this arrangement unless you wish to experiment.
